If then, we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him. - Romans 6:8
I. VIGIL (WAKE)
The vigil for the deceased is the principle rite celebrated by the Christian community in the time following death and before the funeral liturgy. The Christian community keeps watch with the family in prayer to the God of mercy and finds strength in God's presence.
II. THE FUNERAL LITURGY
The Catholic funeral rite recalls Christ's victory over death. As we bury our loved ones we commend them to the tender mercy of Jesus Christ who shares his victory over death with those who follow him. At the same time we seek strength ourselves as we face the mystery of death.
Entrance Rite: Greeting, sprinkling of casket or cremains with holy water, the entrance procession, and opening prayer.
Words of Remembrance:
Liturgy of the Word: First reading, responsorial psalm, second reading, homily, universal prayers
Liturgy of the Eucharist:
Final Commendation: Prayer and silence, incensing of casket or cremains, song of farewell, prayer of commendation and procession to the place of committal (burial).
III. RITE OF COMMITTAL
The rite of commital expresses hope, that, with all those redeemed by Christ, the deceased awaits the glory of the resurrection.
