Sunday, May 12 // 4th Sunday of Easter

Gospel: John 10:27-30

Today’s Gospel presents Jesus as the Good Shepherd. Speaking of his followers, he says:

“I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish. No one can take them out of my hand.”

When I read these beautiful and hope filled words, I thought of the people who were killed in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday and the people, including children, who have died on the way from Central America to the United States and even while in U.S. custody. Were they taken out of Jesus’ hand?

Our faith says they were not. Our faith says that Jesus has given them eternal life. And this gift has been given to all of us now. We need only say yes to it.

And—may we continue to pray for and work for a more just and peaceful world.
