Gospel: John 14:23-29
In today’s Gospel, which is part of Jesus’ long address to his disciples at the Last Supper, he offers them—and us—two gifts.
The first is Jesus’ announcement of the coming of the Holy Spirit, along with the promise that God will live within all who “keep my word”. The second gift is his peace, which is not the worldly understanding of peace as the absence of conflict.
Do we truly believe that God lives within us and is not just a being hanging out in a place we call heaven? And do we truly believe that God is love? If we do, we will be at peace and we will be able to spread that peace to our fellow human beings.
Two weeks ago, Fr. George wrote, “God’s voice is as gentle, as disarming, and as potentially hope-filled as…wonderful little children.”
This is the God who lives within us. This is the God who gives us peace.
