The Holy Trinity is Father, Son and Spirit in perfect community loving so intensely that love radiates to and though all of us. We are privileged to catch a glimpse of this love in families when someone is dying or has died. The loving stories people tell; the kindnesses the deceased is remembered doing, the tears shed all tell of love radiating to neighbors, communities and beyond.
Here are two recent examples: A parishioner who is dying has been a gentle presence here, quietly known for her loving service. Not surprisingly, a neighbor mulched her garden. A member of her hospitality-after-funerals-team found a realtor to work with her in selling her house. Others prepare food, pick up her prescriptions and promise to do a homemade reception after her funeral. They’ve packed her belongings and staffed her house sales, arranged for Sweet Charity, Advent House’s next to new shop to take her treasures and are helping her move to her sister’s home for her final days.
Our neighbor Joe is dying. His children brought him home one last time for a barbecue with his extended family, friends and neighbors. The love poured into the food prepared for his going home to God party was beautiful! Joe always did radiate love, raised their children with good humor, hard work, sacrifice and love. It is no surprise that love is reflected in his offspring and their family representing many nations and many colors. God’s love pulses through us. Thanks be to God.
